The Viennese coffeehouse culture

An Austrian institution conquers the world

The history of Austrian coffeehouse culture is closely linked to the Turkish siege of 1683. According to legend, Georg Franz Kolschitzky was rewarded for a heroic deed around the siege with spoils of war, including "mysterious dark beans". As a result, he is said to have opened the first Viennese coffee house and made the breakthrough by mixing coffee brew with milk and sugar.

In truth, the first coffee house in Vienna was founded by the Armenian spy Deodato, who was in the service of the court and was familiar with the preparation due to his origin.
