Greinburg Castle
Greinburg Castle
Greinburg castle, the oldest residential castle in Austria, has towered majestically above the town of Grein and the Danube for more than 500 years. It was built by Heinrich and Siegmund Prüschenk between 1488 and 1495 with the permission of Emperor Frederick III and was one of the first castles in German-speaking lands. The castle occupies a special place in the hearts of the ducal family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Acquired by Duke Ernest I in 1823, it served as the family’s Austrian residence and hunting lodge in the following generations.
