Viennese coffee house culture

AN AUSTRIAN INSTITUTION CONQUERS THE WORLD

The history behind Austria’s coffee house culture is closely linked with the Turkish siege of 1683. According to legend, Georg Franz Kolschitzky was rewarded with spoils of war for his heroic deeds during the siege, including with some “dark, mysterious beans”. He is then said to have opened Vienna’s first coffee house after making his breakthrough discovery of blending the coffee grounds with milk and sugar.

In reality, however, the first coffee house in Vienna was founded by the Armenian spy Deodato, who served the court and whose origins meant he was familiar with how to prepare coffee.
