Stone Bridge Regensburg

Bei einem Besuch in Regensburg darf man sie auf keinen Fall verpassen: Ein Meisterwerk der mittelalterlichen Baukunst in Deutschland – Die Steinerne Brücke.

Neben dem Regensburger Dom ist sie das bedeutendste Wahrzeichen der Stadt und war sicherlich ein Grund für die Aufnahme Regensburgs in die UNESCO-Welterbeliste. Die Steinerne Brücke, die den altbaierischen Stadtteil Stadtamhof mit der Regensburger Altstadt verbindet, galt im Mittelalter als ein echtes Weltwunder. Sie wurde innerhalb von nur 11 Jahren erbaut, vermutlich von 1135 – 1146. Der rege Handelsverkehr des im Mittelalter bedeutenden Wirtschaftszentrums Regensburg erforderte den dauerhaften Flussübergang. So entschlossen sich Rat und Bürgerschaft zur Errichtung des Bauwerks. Nahezu 800 Jahre lang, bis 1935, blieb sie die einzige Brücke, die in Regensburg und im weiten Umkreis als zuverlässiger Donauübergang diente.

It’s an absolute must-see on any trip to Regensburg and a master-work of mediaeval architecture in Germany – the Stone Bridge. Apart from Regensburg Cathedral, it is the city’s most important landmark and was undoubtedly one of the reasons for Regensburg’s inclusion in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. The Stone Bridge, which links the old Bavarian district of Stadtamhof with Regensburg’s Old Town, was considered a true wonder of the world during the Middle Ages. It was built within the space of just 11 years, presumably between 1135–1146. Brisk traffic due to trading in the important economic centre of Regensburg in the Middle Ages required a permanent river crossing. The city’s council and citizenry therefore decided to have the bridge erected. For nearly 800 years – until 1935 – it was the only bridge that offered a reliable means of crossing the Danube in Regensburg and a wide area surrounding the city. The impressive structure and its stone arches span the river at a length of approximately 300 metres. The bridge itself stands on sixteen footings upon which the barrel vaults of the actual bridge construction rest. As the entrance to the city, the bridge was originally guarded by three towers. Today, only Brückturm tower remains, offering an excellent vantage point over the city. If you’re on holiday in Regensburg, crossing the Stone Bridge is a very rewarding experience which takes you from the historic Old Town, over the Danube, past the Bruckmandl stone carving, which graces the highest point of the bridge, to the idyllic district of Stadtamhof. This wonder of mediaeval engineering skill, which served as the model for Prague’s famous Charles Bridge, is closed to traffic these days.
